Wegovy®: Step-by-Step Injection Guide
Wegovy is a once-weekly injection administered in the arm, thigh, or abdomen. Follow these steps to ensure safe and effective use of the pen.
Step 1: Preparation
-
Check the Pen
- Verify that the medication is not expired and matches your prescribed dose.
- Inspect the liquid through the pen window to ensure it is clear and colourless. Do not use the pen if the liquid is cloudy or discoloured.
- Never share your pen or use someone else’s.
-
Attach a New Needle
- Use a new needle for each injection. Each pack includes four needles, one for each weekly dose.
- Tear off the paper tab from the needle and push the needle straight onto the pen. Turn the needle until it is securely attached.
- Remove both caps from the needle. Keep the outer cap for disposal later, but discard the inner cap.
-
Check the Pen Flow (for New Pens)
- For the first injection with a new pen, check the flow. Turn the dose selector until the flow check symbol (two dots and a dash) appears.
- Hold the pen upright with the needle pointing up. Press and hold the dose button until the counter returns to "0." A drop of Wegovy should appear at the needle tip, indicating the pen is ready.
-
Select the Dose
- Turn the dose selector until your prescribed dose aligns with the pointer. Do not select less than the full dose prescribed.
Step 2: Choosing the Injection Site
-
Options
- Wegovy can be injected into the upper arm, lower abdomen (at least 2 inches/5 cm from the belly button), or the front of the thighs.
-
Tips for Comfort
- Rotate injection sites to avoid overusing the same area.
- Do not inject into scars, bruises, stretch marks, or areas that are hard, red, or inflamed.
- Subcutaneous injections (just under the skin) use tiny needles, which are less painful than most injections. Pinching the skin gently can create a firm surface for easier injection, especially in the thighs or abdomen.
-
Clean the Site
- Clean the injection site with soap and water or an alcohol swab.
Step 3: Injecting Wegovy
- Insert the needle into your chosen injection site.
- Press and hold the dose button until the counter shows "0."
- Continue holding the button while counting slowly to six before removing the needle.
Step 4: Disposing of the Needle
- Carefully place the needle into the outer cap without touching the needle.
- Push the cap on completely, unscrew the needle, and dispose of it properly.
- Use a sharps bin for disposal and follow NHS guidelines for safe disposal.
By following these steps, you can administer Wegovy safely and effectively. For additional information, consult the Patient Information Leaflet or your healthcare provider.
