Introduction
Medicines such as Wegovy (semaglutide) and Mounjaro (tirzepatide) are effective for weight loss and blood sugar control, but rare cases of pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas) have been reported.
Although the risk is very low, it’s important to understand what to look out for and when to seek medical advice.
What Is Pancreatitis?
Your pancreas helps digest food and controls blood sugar by releasing insulin.
Pancreatitis occurs when this gland becomes inflamed. It can range from mild discomfort to a medical emergency requiring hospital care.
How GLP-1 Medicines Are Linked
Large studies show that pancreatitis with GLP-1 medicines is very rare (1-3).
It’s not fully clear if these medicines directly cause it or other factors like gallstones, alcohol intake, high triglycerides, or previous pancreatic disease are more common causes.
However, because the pancreas is involved in digestion and insulin release, all GLP-1 medicines carry a small safety warning.
Who May Be at Higher Risk
- A previous history of pancreatitis
- Gallstones or gallbladder disease
- High triglyceride (a type of fat in your body) levels
- Heavy alcohol consumption
If any of these apply, your prescriber will discuss whether a GLP-1 medicine is appropriate.
Prevention
- Avoid excessive alcohol and keep well-hydrated.
- If you have high triglycerides, follow your prescriber’s advice for managing cholesterol and diet.
- Routine blood tests may be done if symptoms suggest pancreatic irritation.
Contact a doctor urgently or call 999 if you experience:
- Sudden, severe, or persistent abdominal pain, often spreading to the back
- Nausea or vomiting that doesn’t settle
- Fever
- Fast heartbeat
- Abdominal tenderness
Stop your GLP-1 injection and seek medical help immediately if these occur.
Summary
Pancreatitis is a rare but serious condition linked to many causes, including gallstones and alcohol consumption and occasionally reported with GLP-1 medicines.
Knowing the warning signs and reporting symptoms early keeps treatment safe and effective. For most people, the benefits of Wegovy or Mounjaro far outweigh the very small risk.
